We love gathering around a fire pit when the weather cools off. But not everyone has their own warm, cozy spot for backyard relaxation (yet). If you’ve been thinking about building an in-ground fire pit, here’s how to plan for a safe build with great results.
first: Pick a Safe Spot
When choosing where to build your fire pit:
- Make sure you’re at least 10 feet from any buildings
- Do not build it in or under a roofed/enclosed structure
- Stay away from overhanging trees
This will significantly reduce safety risks and give you plenty of room to work.
Then: Prep the Area
Now it’s time to choose the center of your fire pit and mark it by hammering a small piece of wood into the ground (it should serve as a short, vertical marker for your center). Measure out the correct distance for the size of fire pit you want to build, and use marking paint to indicate its circular perimeter.
Next: Dig and Build
Dig down 2-3 inches, tap that down, apply your paver base (1-2 inches) with a little bit of water. Add another layer of paver base and tap that down to get a smooth, level surface for your paver blocks. Smooth it out with a 2×4 and check to make sure you’ve got everything level.
Now it’s time to place your blocks! Place them on the outside perimeter one at a time. Tap them in with a mallot on each side to make sure they rest securely and firmly against each other. After placing the first row of blocks, put the fire ring in the center to see if any adjustments are needed.
Pro Tip: When you stack the second row on top of the first one, staggering the joints gives your fire pit a great aesthetic.
Repeat this process when you add your second row of blocks. Stack, tap, and check your placement using the fire ring.
Then: Add Adhesive, replace, and Repeat
Before you add your third row of blocks, remove blocks from your second row two at a time. Add construction adhesive and replace them as they were. Once they’ve been set with adhesive, repeat with the third layer: set, tap, remove, add adhesive, and replace the blocks. Don’t forget to stagger the seams to keep the charming, hand-built look of your fire pit consistent.
Now: Sit Back and Enjoy
Once your third row of blocks is in, it’s time to set your fire ring, add your charcoal, light your fire, and enjoy the evening. Don’t forget to fully extinguish your fire after every use. Safety is paramount.
