Rodney Steidinger:

This is Rodney with Zebra scapes

Rodney Steidinger:

landscaping podcast. We are here today to talk about plants,

Rodney Steidinger:

plants and trees is very important. You can go to the

Rodney Steidinger:

nursery and check out your plants and be like these are so

Rodney Steidinger:

beautiful, but they're not making it on my property. They

Rodney Steidinger:

don't thrive like that. They're struggling to shrivel. The

Rodney Steidinger:

leaves shrivel. All these things are questions that you wonder

Rodney Steidinger:

why they're not growing on your property. It's not the green

Rodney Steidinger:

thumb, it's the it's the temperature. When you get them

Rodney Steidinger:

from the nursery, they're in an enclosure, or they're in a

Rodney Steidinger:

shaded area, or they're in an area where they don't get as hot

Rodney Steidinger:

the location of the nursery they got it down. They know what

Rodney Steidinger:

plants thrive best, and they know once it's out that door,

Rodney Steidinger:

they're off the hook. So let's do our homework before you get

Rodney Steidinger:

into it, let's check out the zone of where you are to know

Rodney Steidinger:

what plant thrive in this area. So first of all, go with the

Rodney Steidinger:

plants that are best for the Prescott area. We strongly

Rodney Steidinger:

recommend Arizona ash. I mean, it's here. It's native. It

Rodney Steidinger:

belongs here. There's also many other ones, a desert willow.

Rodney Steidinger:

These are plants that will grow. They'll grow with very little

Rodney Steidinger:

water, and they'll grow in the heat and in the temperature.

Rodney Steidinger:

Western red buds, a beautiful plant that you can plant close

Rodney Steidinger:

to the house, that thrive. Western is great. It's

Rodney Steidinger:

excellent. We love it. Some people say, Well, I want an

Rodney Steidinger:

Eastern. I like the different color. Well, it's not going to

Rodney Steidinger:

thrive like the Western. There's a reason for it. So think about

Rodney Steidinger:

what you're getting, and think about what you want to thrive

Rodney Steidinger:

and the difference you want to go with it. Crab apples are

Rodney Steidinger:

great for the Prescott area in this zone, beautiful ornamental

Rodney Steidinger:

plant that grows and gets colors and flowers for the springtime

Rodney Steidinger:

and get some fall color leaves also, those are plants you want

Rodney Steidinger:

to go off of. The plant you want to stay away from is Leland

Rodney Steidinger:

cypresses you want to I mean, Autumn blades are beautiful.

Rodney Steidinger:

They struggle. They the leaves will shrivel up a little bit.

Rodney Steidinger:

But yes, they work, and yes, they're beautiful. Are they

Rodney Steidinger:

going to thrive? It depends on where they at, on your location

Rodney Steidinger:

of your property, and how much water you have going to them.

Rodney Steidinger:

Planting plants is also important that you get the right

Rodney Steidinger:

amount of water. You don't want to plant a plant where it's in

Rodney Steidinger:

granite rock and you got a hard dig. It'll grow, but it's not

Rodney Steidinger:

going to thrive. It's not going to bring forth the height and

Rodney Steidinger:

the shade that you're looking for to do when you're looking

Rodney Steidinger:

for trees. So we want to just to consider the plants that are

Rodney Steidinger:

growing, plant the plants, look up, the plants that are native,

Rodney Steidinger:

the plants that are in the area. Apache, plume, beautiful plant

Rodney Steidinger:

that grows in the area. It's native. Some people don't like

Rodney Steidinger:

it, but keep it trimmed. It looks good. I think it looks

Rodney Steidinger:

amazing. Very, very low water, if any after the first two

Rodney Steidinger:

years, is planted. The Texan Rangers are a great sage to go

Rodney Steidinger:

with, or a Texan sage is a native plant. Keep it clean,

Rodney Steidinger:

pruned. They look great. Manzanita is obviously a great

Rodney Steidinger:

plant. They're very difficult to get off the ground and get

Rodney Steidinger:

started. They're very touchy on the water, but Manton needs a

Rodney Steidinger:

nice plant that will grow in this area. It's a red bark. It

Rodney Steidinger:

looks beautiful. These are plants that really thrive in the

Rodney Steidinger:

area once they're established. And all plants you plant, no

Rodney Steidinger:

matter what it is, you still need to water for the first

Rodney Steidinger:

several months to get it off the ground. And then you can go,

Rodney Steidinger:

instead of weekly, you can go every other week, after a few

Rodney Steidinger:

years of growth on the trees to water them, to save your water.

Rodney Steidinger:

Be very conservative on your water. So those are the plants

Rodney Steidinger:

that I recommend here at zebrascapes. We want to continue

Rodney Steidinger:

to stay in our zone, to keep our plants that we have local and

Rodney Steidinger:

let them grow to the full expectations where they are.

Rodney Steidinger:

When we also talk about plants, it's critical that you watch,

Rodney Steidinger:

look at what you have, about the shade and how much shade it

Rodney Steidinger:

needs. If it does not recommend full sun, it will not thrive.

Rodney Steidinger:

Yes, it'll make it one to two years, but it's not going to

Rodney Steidinger:

grow. If you look at your plant in the first year, it ain't

Rodney Steidinger:

thriving, look it up. Is that plant in the right area of the

Rodney Steidinger:

house? If it's not, I strongly recommend you transplanting it,

Rodney Steidinger:

because it's never going to grow strong. Three to five years,

Rodney Steidinger:

it'll end up dying. The leaves will shrivel up, and you're

Rodney Steidinger:

going to have issues with plants. A lot of times you go to

Rodney Steidinger:

houses go see a Japanese maple, and it's shriveled up, it's not

Rodney Steidinger:

growing, and it's got six hours of sun, or four hours sun, it's

Rodney Steidinger:

just too much, especially if it's the the evening sun, when

Rodney Steidinger:

that Sun's hot and it's hitting on it. And another thing to

Rodney Steidinger:

think about is very important, when you plant plants up against

Rodney Steidinger:

your house, that sun, if you have a stucco house, it bounces

Rodney Steidinger:

off that wall, concrete wall, stucco, and that is warm. Just

Rodney Steidinger:

go out to your house and look at about eight, nine o'clock, when

Rodney Steidinger:

the sun's down, that wall is still hot and that plant cannot

Rodney Steidinger:

cool down. It's important. Keep it away from the house so it's

Rodney Steidinger:

not bouncing that heat off if you want it to thrive. So those

Rodney Steidinger:

are things that we want to constantly think about and look

Rodney Steidinger:

at. When you plant plants. Is the surrounding area? What's

Rodney Steidinger:

around it? What's above it? Do you have a lot of shade? Are you

Rodney Steidinger:

are also when the snow load the roof, snow slides off the roof.

Rodney Steidinger:

How much damaging will the snow make on your plant? It makes

Rodney Steidinger:

damage without a question. Tree snap, limbs, bushes will just

Rodney Steidinger:

crumble when that weight of that snow lands on it, because you're

Rodney Steidinger:

not going to go out and clean it right away, and then it just

Rodney Steidinger:

flattens out. So it's important to look at the surroundings of

Rodney Steidinger:

that around your place when it comes to plants and the health

Rodney Steidinger:

of it all. So shade, the where it's located, the stucco wall, a

Rodney Steidinger:

concrete wall that is hot when it's a close by that and also

Rodney Steidinger:

the utmost important is the zones. Check your zones on what

Rodney Steidinger:

you have around so plants, let's stay in Arizona. Let's stay in

Rodney Steidinger:

our zone. Let's plant the plants that are for this area. That is

Rodney Steidinger:

what thrives. When you start bringing plants in, leaving

Rodney Steidinger:

cypresses and other plants that aren't just made for this area,

Rodney Steidinger:

they will struggle. They'll work without a question. They'll grow

Rodney Steidinger:

and they'll thrive. But nothing like the plants that are native

Rodney Steidinger:

this area. You can use a lot less water if you stick to the

Rodney Steidinger:

plants that are here in this zone. Thanks for listening.
