As communities expand into wildland areas, the risk of wildfires becomes a significant concern. Every year, countless homes and properties are threatened or destroyed by these unpredictable forces of nature. However, with proper planning and proactive measures, individuals and communities can significantly reduce the risk and impact of wildfires. Here are some essential tips for firewise safety:

  1. Create Defensible Space: One of the most effective ways to protect your home is by creating a defensible space around it. This means clearing away flammable vegetation, such as bushes, trees, and dead leaves, for at least 30 feet around structures. Beyond 30 feet, consider thinning trees and maintaining spacing between them to break up the continuity of fuels.

  1. Choose Fire-Resistant Materials: When building or renovating your home, opt for fire-resistant materials whenever possible. This includes using non-combustible roofing materials like metal, tile, or asphalt shingles, and siding materials such as stucco, brick, or fiber cement. Pay attention to windows as well; consider double-paned or tempered glass, which is less likely to break from radiant heat.

  1. Maintain Your Property Regularly: Regular property maintenance is crucial for firewise safety. Keep your lawn mowed, and remove dead vegetation promptly. Clean your gutters regularly, as accumulated debris can become a fire hazard. Store firewood, propane tanks, and other combustible materials at least 30 feet away from structures.

  1. Create a Wildfire Action Plan: Develop a wildfire action plan for your household or community. This plan should include evacuation routes, designated meeting points, and a communication strategy. Make sure everyone in your household understands the plan and knows what to do in case of a wildfire emergency.

  1. Stay Informed: Stay informed about wildfire risks in your area by monitoring local weather and fire conditions. Sign up for emergency alerts and notifications from local authorities. Pay attention to fire restrictions and bans, and follow them diligently. Stop by for our Firewise Awareness Presentation on June 21st from 11am – 1pm to learn more about how to stay safe!

  1. Prepare Your Home for Emergencies: Take proactive steps to prepare your home for emergencies. Install and maintain smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Keep important documents, valuables, and emergency supplies in a readily accessible location, and consider creating a “go bag” with essentials in case of evacuation.

  1. Collaborate with Neighbors: Work together with your neighbors and community organizations to enhance firewise safety in your area. Consider forming a Firewise USA® recognized community, which involves collaborating with local fire departments and implementing specific wildfire mitigation measures.

  1. Be Firewise Year-Round: Firewise safety isn’t just a seasonal concern—it’s a year-round commitment. Stay vigilant about maintaining your property and implementing firewise practices regardless of the season. Remember that wildfires can occur at any time, and preparedness is key to minimizing their impact.

By implementing these firewise safety measures, individuals and communities can reduce the risk of wildfire damage and enhance overall resilience in the face of this natural threat. Taking proactive steps now can help protect lives, property, and the environment for generations to come. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay firewise.

Testimonials From Our Green Space Friends

Would give them 10 stars if I could and here's why. Cole was at our house and we were talking about the backyard. He offered to give us a quote. He presented a fantastic idea for the backyard we hadn't thought about so we said yes. Josh and Raul were fantastic in all they did there. Here are the before and after pictures.
We are very happy with the results of our paver addition and new turf. The crew were on time, polite, and helpful. We would definitely use them again.
Ralphael (sales) and his team (Josh and Raul) were amazing. From initial consultation to final walkthrough everything went smoothly and professionally. The final product (an organically laid out Turf and fixed irrigation) they left everything clean and neat on top of of being beautiful. We highly recommend Ralphael and Zebrascapes for your projects .
Outstanding Experience and top shelf company, crew, and results. Ralfael, Jorge, Juan, Beto and all others were fantastic. The crews work hard, smart, and efficiently. Sam and his clean-up crew also did top shelf work. We'll be using Zebrascapes again. Transformed our backyard, huge upgrade after their work.
Gabriel and his assistant did a great job on my landscaping. cleanup. They worke hard and I am very satisfied with the results
We support Zebrascapes for absolutely. The guys did the greatest job…. We say Bye to our tree…
I originally met the folks from zebra landscaping at a church service project, where they donated their men and materials to help us. This prompted me to call them for our own project to correct a previous contractors poor work. Ralphael came over and then gave us a competitive proposal which we accepted. The work started in a timely manner, and Rosalio, Domingo and Manny jr were professional, thorough, friendly, and did amazing work. We are very pleased with the results (driveway pavers)and would highly recommend Zebra landscaping for your needs!
Ralphael did a great job of meeting our needs. We had a tough situation and needed help fast because we wanted to go back from our new home to our winter home and could not get our foreign car out of our driveway because it is too low for the apron leading into it. Zebrascapes did the job right away in two days at 25% less than the next lower bidder, over 50% less than other bidders. Oscar and his crew worked early morning to dark two days. The four workers were amazing. The worked so hard and got the job done. I highly recommend Zebrascapes.
The crew arrived and reviewed the scope of work with me. I appreciated that they wanted to keep the trees natural looking while still thinning and trimming. At the end of the job they asked me to review the work and see if any additional trimming was desired. They cleaned up the yard and street when finished. I was impressed with the quality of the work and I would definitely hire the company again.
ZebraScapes were awesome! They were on time to do the job and did a great job weed eating and cleaning up our two acres. We are so happy we tried them out. The price was fair also for all the work they did. Highly recommend them! Thank you ZebraScapes, Chris and Susie
